Cove v Yateley Cricket Club U11B on Tue 04 May 2010 at 6pm
Yateley Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report Firstly I would like to say well done to Kathryn who captained the team very well tonight and at the end very sportingly at the end of "3 cheers for Cove" added in "and 1 for playing excellent cricket".

This is the spirit of cricket I like to see and be a part of, so well done to her. Her leadership was positive & as I highlighted to the team she lead by example when fielding, stopping a very firmly struck ball on the full, saving an almost certain boundary when other players had shied away from less well struck balls in the match.

I would also like to quote the Cove Manager who at the end said "I would like to commend the very sporting & gracious way in which Yateley have just cheered Cove after a thrilling close victory, and tell everyone that Callum, who is still only 8, was a very honest sportsman tonight, because when he fielded a ball that ran to the boundary I could not see if he stopped it before it got to the rope, but when I asked him he told me that it had reached the rope. This is very commendable from such a young player, so I would like to ask Cove to give him a round of applause". This again to me is the sort of cricket I wish to be associated with; honesty and integrity in the players, which will do our club's reputation only good.

Progression is something else I want to mention, in closing. I hoped during the season that slowly but surely we would see some players who would last a little longer with the bat in the middle and similarly, over time reduce their extras (please see YCC web site for the full statistics & http://nhycl.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp for the league stats); however, in the match on the 4th May there were players who had been out in the first match (26th April) on their first or near to first ball and they listened to the team talk and today “took their time and enjoyed their 4 overs”. Not only did they enjoy their 4 overs but they came back for more after retiring – well done. The big statistic that stood out today was a turnaround of only 28 extras, compared to 60 in the first match, which is what made the match thrilling and close.

Well done to everyone who bowled (all 10 players in the field) and well done to Andre holding on to some challenging balls too as wicket keeper (couple of great 4s from Andre with the bat too today, so well done). I would like to close with thanks to Natasha, P and Kathryn for joining the team & all 3 performing so well, as without them there was no team; also thanks to the parents for conducting themselves well and cheering good cricket (despite the late hour and chilly wind). See you on the 23/5 at Kingsclere, if available & selected.
