1st XI Match Report
TV pundits tells us ‘it’s a batsmens’ game’. Well it wasn’t on Saturday when the firsts beat second placed Marlow in a low scoring game on a good wicket. Strike bowler Harry B soon accounted for Marlow’s opener Mpofu caught behind by Ryan for 3. With his tail up and generating a lively pace Harry soon accounted for the next three batsmen, all caught behind and Marlow were rocking at 37 for 4. There was no relief from our pace attack as Jon Ssbanja was introduced and he quickly accounted for the stubborn N Paskins for 19 and A Ward for 0 as tentative defensive strokes offered two more catches for keeper Boney. As club elders debated whether any player had taken six catches before in a league match, Harry sent back J Batty caught behind to give him a five wicket haul and Boney his seventh victim with the score on 73. P. Brzezicki struck some massive blows to take his side beyond a hundred but the re-introduction of Anthony Muir saw the tail mopped up leaving Harry on 5 for 49, Seb 3 for 27 and Boney with a club record seven catches in a league match. It has to be said that we looked outstanding in the field and it was our best session of the season.
Our batting has been inconsistent but we welcomed back James Halson and Oliver Soames from university although off-spinner Batty had a different welcome in mind sending them both back for noughts, quickly followed by our keeper. Skipper James Muir and Dan Bone steadied the ship but at 58 for 4 two more wickets fell in quick succession leaving us contemplating a potential major embarrassment but not for the first time the lower middle order came to the rescue. Jacques Pienaar (27no) combined watchful defence with aggressive intent and was well supported by 16 year old Hampshire youth player Rhodes Franklin (19no) whose assured and powerful straight driving steadied nerves around the pavilion as they took us to a four wicket win that should have been considerably more comfortable. Thanks to Muirey for a great job standing in for Stu.
No Game Set & Match in SW19 For Yateley CC - click on the attachment to see the report with photos
Yateley Cricket Club played their first Surrey Trust League game on Sunday 21st June 2015 against the 2013 Champions Old Rutlishians Cricket Club from Wimbledon SW19. The boys wore the new coloured kit (pics below) and were inserted into bat, the match turned into a thriller to keep everyone on the edge of their seats. The average age of the team was only 19 so this was a very young but talented Yateley team who will have learnt lots from the experience.
Yateley started batted with a nice tempo against mainly spin bowling and at 20 Overs James Muir and Oliver Soames had put on 113 with James reaching his 50 off 56 Balls. James fell not too long after drinks for a good 65 so Skipper Ryan Bone arrived at the crease and Yateley looked set for a big score, the scoreboard ticked over and Yateley lost a couple of wickets as we tried to accelerate. Oli kept the runs going and was rewarded in the last over with a century coming off 101 balls. A great knock from Oli and the first Yateley player in the STL to score a century.

Yateley finished on 229 for 4 off our 40 overs.
We all went off in the impressive facilities at Old Ruts CC and enjoyed the tea. However we regrouped and headed on to bowl knowing wickets were the order of the day with the orange ball.
Jacques Pienaar and Kerr Franklin started off well and we soon had Old Rut’s thinking of a collapse as 2 wickets a piece had the home side in trouble, Sam Sugars then joined the wicket taking spree by clean bowling their 5th batsmen, this left Old Ruts at 61 for 5 off 12 overs. Cometh the hour!! Old Ruts had one of their best batsmen lurking at no 7 and the impressive R. Lever took the game by the scruff of the neck, his knock of 88 that included 11 x 4’s and 3 x 6’s gave Old Ruts the lift they needed. wickets were coming at the other end and finally when Lever was dismissed by Kerr at 190 for 8 with 8 overs left, the ninth wicket soon followed leaving the last pair still needed 34 to win. Try as Yateley might that elusive last wicket never came and the final pair scrambled over the line with 2 balls to go in a thrilling finish.
A great thrilling game and many new friends and admirers in SW19. Well done to all that played this was a fantastic effort with plenty more to come.
