1st XI Match Report

After two, confidence boosting, wins the firsts failed to complete a hat-trick of successes losing at Kew. Kew opted to bat first and an opener for one, smartly run out by James Muir. Rajapakse immediately survived a confident appeal for a catch behind and with Nathan Pearce in support, Kew proceeded without alarm to 67 for 1 when Jon Ssbanja sent back Pearce. Anthony Muir then took two quick wickets and Kew were pegged back at 80 for 4. A dropped catch had earlier reprieved Rajapakse and he took full toll marshalling the middle and lower order against a disciplined Yateley bowling display and when Ssbanja finally sent back him back for 85 Kew had battled to a creditable 201 for 8. Muir ended with 2 for 37 and Ssbanja 2 for 41.

In spite of the early loss of John Howells, Muirey and Ryan put together a 50 partnership ahead of the required run rate which should have established the foundation for a successful chase. But when Boney holed out for 33 with 56 on the board our middle order collapse to 73 for 6 in the face of a devastating spell from Thomas which put Kew in the driving seat. Muirey watched the carnage from the bowlers’ end but was then joined by Rhodes in a fighting partnership which wrested the initiative back. Indeed at 146 for 6 the game was shifting in Yateley’s favour when Thomas crucially sent back James for 58 and with Rhodes soon caught for 31, the tail folded and we were all out for 161.

Best wishes to Ray de Winter

John Parker, Chris Jacobs and Peter Hanks (former 1st XI opening bowler) and visited Ray de Winter in hospital last Thursday as he continues to recover after his stroke. He enjoyed a visit to the local pub even though he was only allowed orange juice!
