Match report August Bank Holiday and the third year at Marble Hill Park vs. Crossbats XI.
Despite a brief shower the game started almost on time with Crossbats winning the toss and choosing to field. It was tough going with their left hander Samin showing great control and a slightly two-paced pitch. Yateley had to weather the storm but were still 31-4 from 13 overs. Will Forster mounted a counter-attack but eventually skied one but not until he had made what was the top score of 26. Ant McGowan and John Murphy had a partnership and Vid and Tom Brooks helped take the score to what looked like a modest 117.
It was almost a perfect start with George Murphy uprooting the stumps first ball, but wait a bail was dislodged at the non-strikers end by George and it became a no ball. George then removed the other opener to make amends. Tom Brooks got their number 3 to nick off to Josh at slip and when Ant cleaned out their opener (at last) Yateley were back in with a fighting chance. It was time to turn to spin and Vid was brought on and quickly swung the game with 3 wickets helped by some sharp catching from Joe L, James and Will. Ant then had the dangerous Rash caught by Savir and 57-3 had become 60-7. James Harvey and Josh were now brought into the attack and James induced a mis-shot that Vid gleefully pouched and Josh cleaned out another. With some tension Yateley then dropped 3 catches in 2 overs, but then Akhil found John Murphy at mid on who gobbled up the chance to complete a remarkable victory.
A good effort, particularly in the key part of the game where 4 catches (2 sharp) made all the difference. It kept our winning record at the venue.
