Match report A trip to Cheriton "Bowl" on a blazing hot Sunday afternoon. A chat with the groundsman who promises "low and slow" and with the outfield lush in part and almost hilly on one side it promises to be a low scoring affair.
Yateley won the toss and Scott Gore is roped into open with John Garrett - boundaries are hard to find but the score ticks over until the captain slips when sent back and twists his knee, "retiring hurt" for precautionary reasons.
No reason to stress as Savir comes in and the score moves on to 64-0 off 18. Then the flurry of wickets as 64-0 turns to 77-6. Will Forster showed some stability until he took on a throw and lost. The captain was called in to return and
with Owen Evans (who hit a rare 6) scrambled 24 runs off the last 4 overs - 121-9 off 40, something to defend.
Owen and Shreyas opened and bowled tightly restricting St Cross to under 2 an over, then Andre and James Harvey kept the pressure on., Josh Gore, Will Forster and Savir all had effective spells too as YCC kept control of the scoring rate.
The game was sealed when Andre had the presence of mind (or sheer fortune) to deflect a drive onto the stumps to dismiss the last dangerous looking batsman. Shreyas came back on and his 2 wickets and a sharp throw from Owen finished
off the innings for a 24 run victory.
Highlights in the field were Andre's 2 catches and 2 run outs, Scott's 2 stumpings and the energy of Ollie Reese (who cheerfully swept in the deep), Savir, Will and James.
Victory was followed by a quick drink in the local pub to end a great day.
