Match report Having completed the double over Chesham last season, the tables were turned on the firsts in the season’s opener at Chandlers Lane on Saturday. Put in to bat, we were soon in trouble losing skipper Stuart caught without troubling the scorers. John Howells and Mannu Rawat mounted a good partnership against Chesham’s tight attack but having reached 43 for 1, the introduction of Pip Francis brought rapid rewards as he sent back John (19)and Dan V in quick succession. Mannu was batting nicely and it was a surprise when he became Francis’ third victim for 34 with the score on 71. Jacques Pienaar (28) and Dan Bone (17) batted well and took us past the 100 mark but both were out quickly thereafter with Charlie then falling LBW. We looked in difficulties at 121 for 7 but Jon Sebanja (50) and Sam Kennett (24) salvaged the innings though with a run a ball 67 run stand and an array of fine shots and we felt we’d achieved a par score in finishing 196 all out.

Chesham’s innings followed a similar pattern with solid contributions from their top order but we took wickets at regular intervals and when Jacques sent back two in quick succession and Sam’s leggies accounted for the dangerous Kwatsha, the game was evenly balanced at 113 for 6. Having bowled a superb spell, Pip Francis came to the wicket and sealed an outstanding ‘man of the match’ performance with a brutal assault on the our bowling attack scoring 61 of just 29 balls. When he was bowled by Seb with six runs needed and two wickets left, we sensed an outside chance of victory
but it wasn’t to be as Chesham ran out winners by two wickets. Seb finished a fine game for him with 3 for 20
