Match report A disappointing day out for the thirds saw us lose to Thatcham by 4 wickets after having posted our highest score (by a long way) of the season. In pursuit of league points Yateley won the toss and elected to bat. Another solid opening partnership of 76 in 14 overs between the captain (23) and Nichols (43) saw Yateley off to the required start. Three quick wickets threatened to derail the momentum but excellent innings’ from Freeman (62) and Upkar (59) and a nice little cameo appearance from Noel at the close saw us post 243 for 7 in 45 overs.

Despite the pitch being a ‘belter’ and the outfield being fast we had no reason to believe that this score would be overhauled especially with the strong bowling line-up at hand. Unfortunately Thatcham had different ideas and a positive approach by their batsmen saw the runs flow from the outset. Cameron (1 4 19 in 4 overs) struck early but quality batsmen followed and only a classy run out from Jacob (or perhaps a hand from Andy) pegged them back. The captain (1 4 28 in 4 overs) managed to remove the free scoring no. 2 batsman but the ever present No.4 (84no including 6 sixes and 8 fours) continued to punish anything full and wide. Andy (2 4 62 in 8 overs) and Jacob (1 4 31 in 8 overs) managed to remove a further 3 batsmen but the discipline was not evident to contain the scoring and our total of 243 started to look about 100 runs too few. Thatcham ultimately overhauled our score in the 36th over and yet again we were undone by a ‘lone wolf’ Thatcham batsman riding his luck.

Despite the ‘déjà vu’ from the first half of losing to Eversley and Thatcham, the 3’s are still in the hunt being only 15 points behind Eversley (with them still to play Finch) and 4 points behind Thatcham. Hopefully a return to winning ways this Saturday against Bracknell will see the ‘cat firmly amongst the pigeons’ !!
