Match report This week saw the 3’s pitted against bottom of the table Henley at a lovely ground in Nettlebed. The pitch (covered no less!!) was in great shape so winning the toss meant an easy decision to bat first. Soames (41) and Nichols (18) registered another 50 run opening partnership before Nichols lost patience with the young off spinner. Joe (1) was unlucky to get a harsh LBW but the rest batted fluently with Freeman (47) and Jacob Vintcent (44no) being the ‘pick of the crop’. The innings was declared on 221 for 6 after 46 overs with Upkar (11) and Jacob dispatching 3 sixes in the last two overs.
In the field, the attempt to use the old ball to contain the scoring failed dismally as the ball literally disappeared down a country lane in the second over. The introduction of the new ball bought Andy (1 4 41 in 11) and Jacob (1 4 10 in 3) into the attack and Andy removed a seasoned opener caught behind with an absolute ‘jaffer’ spitting off a length. Jacob absolutely terrorised the other opener with some wayward fast bowling and a superb diving catch by Cameron earned him a wicket. Joe took over from Jacob and bowled a superb spell of 1 4 30 in 9 overs. Swinging the ball both ways he removed another seasoned veteran and could have had more wickets if luck had favoured him. Cameron bowled another excellent spell of 1 4 26 in 6 and thoroughly deserved his wicket well caught behind by James. In summary, Henley gave it a good go but fell 22 runs short with 5 wickets in hand. Missed opportunities at crucial times could have swung the match our way but in the end a draw against a very good side was probably a fair result. The 3’s are still in 3rd place and only 5 points behind second placed Eversley.
