Yateley Cricket Club Won 4 wickets

Match report
TV pundits tells us ‘it’s a batsmens’ game’. Well it wasn’t on Saturday when the firsts beat second placed Marlow in a low scoring game on a good wicket. Strike bowler Harry B soon accounted for Marlow’s opener Mpofu caught behind by Ryan for 3. With his tail up and generating a lively pace Harry soon accounted for the next three batsmen, all caught behind and Marlow were rocking at 37 for 4. There was no relief from our pace attack as Jon Ssbanja was introduced and he quickly accounted for the stubborn N Paskins for 19 and A Ward for 0 as tentative defensive strokes offered two more catches for keeper Boney. As club elders debated whether any player had taken six catches before in a league match, Harry sent back J Batty caught behind to give him a five wicket haul and Boney his seventh victim with the score on 73. P. Brzezicki struck some massive blows to take his side beyond a hundred but the re-introduction of Anthony Muir saw the tail mopped up leaving Harry on 5 for 49, Seb 3 for 27 and Boney with a club record seven catches in a league match. It has to be said that we looked outstanding in the field and it was our best session of the season

Our batting has been inconsistent but we welcomed back James Halson and Oliver Soames from university although off-spinner Batty had a different welcome in mind sending them both back for noughts, quickly followed by our keeper. Skipper James Muir and Dan Bone steadied the ship but at 58 for 4 two more wickets fell in quick succession leaving us contemplating a potential major embarrassment but not for the first time the lower middle order came to the rescue. Jacques Pienaar (27no) combined watchful defence with aggressive intent and was well supported by 16 year old Hampshire youth player Rhodes Franklin (19no) whose assured and powerful straight driving steadied nerves around the pavilion as they took us to a four wicket win that should have been considerably more comfortable. Thanks to Muirey for a great job standing in for Stu
