Yateley Cricket Club Sat 1st XI v Datchet on Sat 14 Jun 2014 at 1:00
Yateley Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report The firsts suffered their first defeat of the season when they went down by three wickets against Datchett on Saturday in a rain-reduced game. Our batting hasn’t matched our bowling so far this season and it was a case of business as usual. It didn’t look that way though as, asked to bat, we made our best start of the season as James Muir and John Howells looked in little difficulty against their opening attack. The introduction of spin brought no immediate alarms but on 76 John was drawn down the wicket and stumped off for 45. E. Elahi joined the attack and his left arm spin saw James also stumped for 40 with the score on 97 off 25. After Ryan Bone was caught just inside the line for 21 on 110 for 3, we then struggled to form another partnership and even committed the cardinal sin of giving Datchett an extra over when we were all out for 161 in the 46th over. Elahi finished with 7-35 on left arm spin which really shouldn’t have caused us that much trouble

Datchett made a steady start in reply as Elahi and Mike George took them to 49 when they were both removed by Anthony Muir and Stuart Lipo. Lipo immediately had Perveiz Aziz caught and at 56 for 3 and with our opponents behind the run rate, we were well in the game. Tim Alldis had other ideas though and almost single handedly took the game away from us with an impressive performance of watchful defence and calculate aggression and at 141 for 4 Datchett were cruising. We kept fighting as we have shown all season and when a run out from Sam Kennett was followed by Kumar Sadagopan sending back Alldis for a superb 90 and Tilley for 1, a tenser finish than expected emerged. We even put men round the bat, rewarded by a smart slip catch by Ants but with two overs left the no 9 opted to break the shackles and finished the game with a lusty blow to give Datchett a deserved victory and leave us to wonder, for the second week running, why we had left 40 runs on the table which surely proved vital. There is no doubt that we have been very close to winning the last two games and just a little more ‘tightness’ in our game at vital moments would have made all the difference. The more we experience this level of cricket the more we will adapt. More to work on Wednesday
