Match report U17 County Cup Final at the Rose Bowl

A focused team arrived at a warm and dry Rose Bowl for the U17 County Cup Final - for the Kerry Cup, with a large 'mob' from YCC had travelled down in hope of success. . The opposition were Portsmouth and Southsea, who the U17's beat last year in the Semi-Final, on the way to becoming the inaugural cup winners. At U15 level two years ago P&S had knocked YCC out of the County Cup - so a tough fixture was expected.

Yateley lost the toss and took to the field. Miles Covers and Charle Harris opened the bowling and after 6 overs had taken the first four wickets, incluing they key two P&S batman. Miles' bowling was outstanding, as his his figures of 3 wickets for 7 runs off 3 overs demonstrated. The hard, green wicket rewarded his fast bowling and the oppostion batsman seemed to have no idea of how to play him.

Captain Chris James sensing that P&S were struggling with fast agressive bowling, changed the bowling attack and brought himself on next and continued to attack the P&S batsman. Taking 4 wickets for 9 off his four overs showed Chris at his best. Kerr held down the other, but was attacked the by rather desperate P&S batsman trying to get runs before losing all their wickets.

As his his want, Jacques joined the attack to clean up the tail. However the other bowlers had left slim pickings leavig Jacques to pick up the final P&S wicket with his first ball!

In the field the commitment was outstanding. Jacques tried to run through a very solid bench in the frst over, picking up a nasty bruise. But this commitment was reflected throughout the team with some excellent diving stops saved runs. The outfield appeared to a little bumpy as numerous players took brusies and bumps as they stopped the ball. Catch of the day goes to Chris James for his fine outstanding diving catch to his right.

P&S would have been greatly disappoined with the final total of 73, especially since they only batted for 14.1 overs. A reflection on the bowling an fielding for the entire team.

The score was never going to be enough, especially since the U17s batted all the way down to 11. In the end only two batsman were required, openers Jonny Dow and James Halson scoring all the runs that were required. Afer a relativly slow start, the required total was reached on the 11th over.

Presentation of the Cup was done by 98 year ond Harry Kerry, who had donated the trophy to the county for an U17 competation. The trophy was first awarded last year and Yateley are the only name on the trophy!

Thanks to all the players for an outstanding performance, not just in their cricketing skills but in their atttide and demonstration of what is good about YCC. A big thanks to all the supporters who contributed to a special day for the U17s and Yateley Cricket Club.
