1st XI Match Report
Having knocked Wokingham off the top of Division One last week and Marlow a few weeks earlier, we did the same to Cookham Dean this week with a convincing 141 run win in another fine display. After winning the toss (yes, we won the toss) Yateley decided to bat on what looked a good batting track. After losing James Muir for 4, James Halson and Ollie Soames built a strong partnership in the face of disciplined bowling. James fell lbw for 41 when looking well set then Olly (24) and the brothers Bone quickly followed leaving us 74 for 4 then 96 for 6 as the visitors moved into a strong position. However, Rhodes Franklin and Jon Ssebanja seized back the initiative putting on 43 in quick time and when Rhodes fell for 13, Seb opened up and, well supported by Sam K, launched an all-out assault on the bowling sending a fine array of shots to all parts of the ground. When Sam fell for 19 we were quickly 228 all out leaving Seb undefeated on 94.
Yateley took to the field and decided to try something different by taking the old ball. A dream start to the innings saw a wicket maiden for Stuart Lipo in the first over then things just got better, with the second over being a maiden from Rhodes Franklin and Jonathan Ssebanja joining the elite group of fielders with a direct hit run out, leaving Cookham Dean 0 for 2 after two overs which quickly became 19 for 4 after 12 overs. We kept up constant pressure on the batsmen as Stu and Seb made rapid inroads backed up by some fine catching and diving saves in the field. Cookham were soon 48 for 7 for with leading wicket taker Ants still not introduced. S. Mangat and Ahmed put up some resistance but when Mangat fell to Stu the end was in sight and the introduction of Ants quickly wrapped things up as he had the no 11 sent back to the pavilion by a stunning catch taken his brother, James “goal keeper” Muir to leave Cookham Dean a sorry 87 all out. After starting the season rock bottom for three matches we now move into third place in Division one.
Great game and played hard and full of the right attitude. Yateley can hold their heads high after beating another table topping team. Thanks to Liz for scoring, our supporters and of course Cookham Dean. Finally thank you to the groundsmen for the work on the wicket and ground.
