| 25 Nov 2002 An Email from Jon Abblett in Australia |
"Hello everyone
The photos of the dinner dance looked as if every one had a good time and I hope George is ok! I
just wanted to say thank you very much for the 1st XI batting award.
I didn't expect anything as I only played half a season. I am also glad
Tom won the Young Player award, he deserved the Berkshire one as well but thats something he
can go for next year! Australia is great, its very hot as it is
reaching 38 to 40 on a regular basis! The cricket is depressing as we are
performing badly and am coping alot of abuse for it. But it's all in good
fun!
I am going to New Zealand for two weeks after New Year and am
spending New Year's eve on a boat in Sydney Harbour which will be amazing. I
hope everything is good with you and your head isn't hurting too
much!!!!!! Best wishes Jon"

| 23 Nov 2002 - Annual Dinner & Dance |
|
Club Chairman, John Parker, did his usual fine job of
organising and hosting the annual dinner on Saturday. It was the biggest
turnout ever with over 100 guests. The Chairman of Cricket, Colin Justice presented the playing awards. Roger
Maskell won the Clubman award for all the hard work he does
on the ground and pavillion. He was upstaged this year, however, by
George Wakely
after he got rather too exited dancing with Daphne. He
fell over and cracked his head on the disco lights. After Shirley administered some
expert first aid he was taken away by ambulance to Frimley Park hospital
where he received 6 stiches to a gash in his forehead. I can confirm
he
is OK since, along with his other duties, the webmaster had the dubious honour
of picking him up from A&E later on in the evening and taking him home!

| 10 Oct 2002 Sunday League Awards Dinner |
|
We didn't receive any awards this year, but it didn't stop the small Yateley contingent
from enjoying themselves at the annual Sunday League dinner on Thursday
evening. Perhaps it had something to do with that enormous bottle of wine
in front of Bob Drewell. Stuart (above) is listening intently to Peter
Osgood, who provided the after dinner speech. Why a footballer was
delivering this at a cricket dinner is a little bewildering, though! Shaun
Udal presented the awards as usual. [The Webmaster had to drive the boys
home and, therefore, didn't have a single glass of red wine all
evening

Transport to YCC Dinner Dance on 23 Nov |
|
| Stuart Hill is again planning to run a mini-coach service from Yateley and the surrounding areas to Camberley Heath
Golf Club, and return, for the Dinner & Dance. You will be
picked up at convenient locations around Yateley and dropped off local to
your house on return. Overall cost will be £210 for a 39 seater,
we usually get 25-30 takers making the cost £7-£8 per head but this will obviously
be dependant on the numbers using the coach. If you are interested please contact

| 23 Sept 2002 Work on the Cricket Square |
|
| The cricket square at Chandlers Lane was officially 'put to bed' for the winter
months over the weekend of 20/21 September. On Friday it had a very
thorough trim of all its grass, triple pass scarification followed by deep
solid tine aeration. On the Saturday this was followed by the overseeding and
top dressing, 2 cwt of seed and over 3 tonne of top-dressing loam was spread
over the square, this was a considerably easier task than previous years due
to the hire of a combined overseeder/top-dresser attachment for our
tractor.
The bowlers run-ups to the nets were also scarified, levelled
off and reseeded, the artificial wicket was also weeded.
Thanks go to the able bodied guys who came down to assist, namely Bert King, Colin
Justice, Paul Sandford, John Parker, Dave Mace, Jonno Hale, Tom White, Selwyn
Grimsley, Stuart Hill and of course our expert on technical matters Roger
Maskell. Thanks also to TH Whites for hire of machinery. Whilst all this
was going on two full size Hockey pitches were also being marked out by Roger
Maskell, Angelika and son. The first pitch apparently was 2mm out of true
from one corner to the other, maybe down to the two cans of bitter that Roger
had drunk at lunchtime.
Work does not stop there though, we still intend
to address the bare patches around the outfield and the bowler's run-ups at
the top end of the square, the nets also need to be raised for the winter,
why not ring Stuart Hill to offer your assistance before he calls you.

| 23 Sept 2002 Hockey Club Beach Party |
|
| The Hockey Club are holding their first social event of the season on Saturday 28 September, starting at 6.00pm.
Cricket members are very welcome. There'll be BBQ food, Cocktails and Beach games
(hopefully including beach-volleyball, french cricket and boules). Fancy dress
is encouraged but optional!
|
| 10 Sept 2002 Volunteers needed to put the "Square to Bed" |
|
| The club are holding a 2-day working party to put the square to bed on Friday
20 Sept and Sat 21 Sept. This work is critical at this
time of year as we still have good conditions for the new seed to grow and
will continue the excellent wickets that we have had this season. It is a lot of fun, everybody mucks in and you do learn quite a bit
about grounds maintenance. Give Stuart Hill a ring on 01252 879465 to
offer your assistance or if you have any queries.
