18 August 2002 - Our President Comes of Age

Max Kaye, our president, swapped his Jag for a free bus pass today as he reached the ripe old age of 65. He celebrated in the customary way with a few friends and old cricketers. Josie (below) organised the surprise event and daughter (ex tea lady) Deborah and son (past player) Richard led the speeches. Max was, arguably, the best ever Yateley all-rounder in his time.

17 August 2002 - 1st XI Umpire Bowls a Maiden Over!

Congratulations to Ken Boxall who announced his engagement to Patricia at his 60th birthday party today. A few (non-playing) members of the cricket club were there to help him celebrate. Well done, Ken. We all wish you every happiness.

The 2002 subs are due and will be £60-00 if received by Saturday 1st June at the latest. Any later and the subs will increase to £70-00. It is recommended that those still outstanding pay this weekend to avoid any last minute problems.

Acting Chairman - Cricket Committee

19 May 2002 - Scorebox Progress Report
Work has now started on the scorebox as you see by the (not very exciting) photograph below showing the foundations. The fencing is to keep off the players by the way, not the birds.
There are still bricks available for purchase, if you want to help towards the cost.

11 May 2002 - A Visit from the Old Boys
Max Kaye (our President) organised a small reunion of past members of Yateley Cricket Club at the clubhouse on Saturday evening. For most it was their first visit to the new facilities at Chandlers Lane.
In the photograph below Max is greeting Peter Hanks and his wife, Sheila. Peter was our opening bowler in the 60s and 70s (to be a fast bowler in those days you had to be tall!)
In the photo below the man on the right (Eddie Smith) last played for Yateley in 1974. The others are Geoff Gill, Chris Kent and Len Sweales.

25 April 2002 - Chris Jacobs hangs up his boots

Our Cricket Chairman, Colin Justice, reports:

I was very sorry to hear from our webmaster that he has decided to hang up his boots for a permanent place at his terminal and on the boundary edge.

I think it is only proper to place on record the club's thanks for his prodigious efforts with bat and ball over twenty years because the majority of members will not have seen Chris in his prime. When I joined the club Chris batted 3 or 4 for the firsts and made an awful lot of runs. In 1985 he scored 145 against Cookham Dean - a record that stood for over 10 years. I still remember the innings with six after six going into and over the trees at the top end of the ground and over the road at the bottom. His aggregate that season was the second highest ever in the league history - 753. He was also our uncomfortably quick opening bowler and was always in the bowling averages as well.

So thanks again Chris and we'll just have to get used to that irritating red glint from your wine glass as the rest of us drag ourselves through to the end of play. And please don't tell us it wasn't as good as in your day - we know, we know

24 April 2002 - Scorebox Ready for June?

The Committee has decided to proceed with the construction of a brick scorebox (with combined storage facility) at a cost of about £13,000. The plan is to start after the Spring Bank Holiday with completion by mid-June, if at all possible.

This will make a big hole in our Development Fund unless we get some sponsorship. You can all help by purchasing a BRICK at £5 each. If every member purchased just one brick this would cover the facia, at least. If you wish to be part of history please reserve your brick now by sending an email to BUY a BRICK CAMPAIGN.

10 April 2002 - Aylward Cup Draw
We have drawn Hartley Wintney in the first round of the Aylward Cup to be played by 28 May. The full details are in the Senior Cricket pages. Last year we were knocked out in the first round and went on to win the Aylward Plate for a record number of times.

20 Mar 2002 - Harry Newman's Death
It is with great sadness that we have received the news that Harry Newman (82 years) died on Sunday. Harry was on the committee for a number of years as our Treasurer, a duty that he carried out with tremendous enthusiasm and skill. He also gave enormous time to the colts section when his son Gareth was playing and was their 'resident scorer'. Harry was a tower of strength and was made a Vice-President for his services to the club and continued to take a close interest although failing health prevented him from making the number of visits to the new clubhouse that he would have liked.

Harry was a stickler for doing things correctly and would always insist on knowing a new bowler's name before he started a spell. "Bowler's name please" would frequently echo across the ground. At Cranleigh one Sunday morning, this familiar refrain rang out with ever increasing insistence as no reply came. Eventually someone plucked up courage...."Harry, it's Gareth.......your son"

Those who knew him will remember Harry with great fondness and the club extends its heart-felt sympathy to his wife Alice and sons Tony and Gareth.

The funeral service will be held at Holy Trinity church, Hawley at 12 noon on Wednesday 27 March. Family flowers only. Donations to the Bristish Heart Foundation.

15 Mar 2002 - 'Stars in their Eyes' Winners
Simon Fishleigh won this year's contest, impersonating someone or other! Simon Massey won best costume as Adam Ant. Unfortunately, there was no official photographer present, hence no embarrassing pics.

27 Feb 2002 - 'Stars in their Eyes' Latest
Already Simon Massey, Simon Fishleigh, Stuart Lipo and John Parker have signed up to sing on Friday 15 March. We need another 4 budding PopStars so get your name down. The prizes are even better than last year! Tickets are £7 a head and include jacket potatoes (cheese, chilli, beans ... you name it).

27 Feb 2002 - Contact from 'Down Under'
Just to prove our website is reaching the parts that others can't we have recieved an email from an ex-Colt who is now living in Australia. Andy Prior was our star (fast bowling) Colt in the 70's. He's doing well and plans to pay us a visit in the summer. It's great to hear from him. Click here to read a full (unabridged) transcript of his email

23 Feb 2002 - Coaching Course
There is a Level 1 coaching course being planned for the second half of April. If anyone is interested in getting a coaching qualification (and improve their own game in the process) please call Colin Justice on 01276 691829.

23 Feb 2002 - Indoor Nets
Indoor nets are being well attended at Wellington College on Sundays between 8.00pm and 10.00pm. Why not go along and start practicing for the season? N.B. There are no nets on March 3rd as the Sports Hall is booked for other activities but we are back on on the 10th.

8 Feb 2002 - Quiz Night
QuizMaster Selwyn Grimsley seen here rattling off another round of perplexing questions to 12 studious teams made up of members and friends. The ladies and non-cricketers were not too amused though, with the last round devoted to cricket questions. It didn't matter. The cricketers couldn't do any better - it turned out to be the lowest scoring round of the night!
The evening was enjoyed by all, especially the winning team: Norfolk N' Chance. You can them and others by clicking here for the PHOTOGRAPHS.

03 Feb 2002 - Cricket Chairman Stands Down
Keith Sawyer is moving house to the other side of Andover and, unfortunately, is having to stand down as Cricket Chairman. He will continue to do what he can for the Committee and will continue to play whenever available. Colin Justice will take over until the start of the new season by which time a successor will be announced. Thanks, Keith, for a job well done.

06 Jan 2002 - Patio and Scorebox Developments
FOYCC has been working hard to progress the building of a patio and the scorebox. There has been some success in obtaining donations of materials (slabs, bricks, shrubs etc) from local DIY companies and garden centres. Two bricklayers have agreed to donate a couple of days labour. We need more, so if there are any members with relevant skills please make yourselves known.

01 Jan 2002 - Another £600 for the Derrick Eastwood Fund
Mark Worthington (Daphne's son-in-law) raised £600 for Derrick's Memorial Fund in his firm's Christmas raffle . Thanks to Mark and his work collegues.
